Please sign up for TELLBLAST and give us your email at the front desk so we can do our best to notify you IN ADVANCE!
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ATTENDING MY FIRST CLASS? A note from Kira:
Please try to limit perfumes respecting the potential for sensitivity by others, if possible.
Come in comfortable clothing such as sweat or dance/yoga pants and a t-shirt, tank top, sports bra, etc…
If the teacher can see your body, she can better assess your movements and make corrections as needed.
Loose/Baggie clothing hinders the teachers ability to see movement as clearly as something more fitted but the
level of comfort is up to the individual.
As you take class you can decide if tennis shoes help or hinder you as you may want to take them off or change
to a “dance shoe” should you chose to stick with it. Many ppl dance in socks, ballet slippers, other sorts of
dance shoes providing arch support as needed or barefoot. The choice is yours but acknowledge that our foot health
does need some support in the long run.
A “hip scarf” is an enjoyable addition to classroom attire and can be purchased from the boutique in the studio.
Hipscarves are priced according to their quality level and amount/type of bead and/or coin work. They tie around
the widest part of your hips around the back coming across the front over your hip bones. Tied level like the
horizon across your hips, they actually serve a purpose as it draws the eye to what the hips are doing and is
therefore easier to evaluate whether movements are being executed accurately or not. Any scarf type thing that
can be tied all the way around the hips works for this purpose. But the glittery jingly things are so much fun!
Last but not least, come into the studio with your “dancer” hat on!!! Give yourself permission to be a dancer
for an hour and learn something new. Let your time in class at the studio revive and grow you by taking your mind
off your daily stressers and moving your body in a new and fun way. Just like I would have a heck of a time being
taught to play soccer by my teenage daughter, this is new muscle use for your body. Please be patient and
forgiving with yourself and resist the temptation to compare yourself to others. This is an INDIVIDUAL
experience! Allow yourself the chance to do something unique, out of the box and incredibly rewarding,
both physically and emotionally. The women of the Middle East knew what they were doing when they created
this dance art form – it is utterly astounding if you stay with it! It was created by women for women regardless
of size, fitness level or any other such thing.
** This art form is like we all bought the exact same dress, how different would we all look in it if standing
side by side??!! It is meant to enhance and be an expression of the individual as it becomes part of you.
Feel free to come alone to class, you will make friends RIGHT AWAY!!! We are just like that under my roof!!
Happy Dancing,
Kira

About Bellydance
The art of Bellydance has been passed from mother to daughter and woman to woman for a thousand generations, and is a wonderful activity for developing fitness, grace, sense of timing and self-esteem. Expand your creative freedom in a safe, supportive, fun & Beautiful way!
Please read this to help you better understand this lovely art form!
Belly Dancing is what it is called in the west and many other places around the world. But in the Middle East it is known as Raqs Sharqi. The dance is thought to have evolved from ancient religious worship in goddess temples but there is no solid proof of this. Now it is performed mainly at all-female gatherings where older women are revered as having greater life experience to bring to the performance. Being at one with the emotions evoked by the music is essential to the dance. It is the visual form of expression to illustrate the mood of the music.
I highly recommend putting a dance bag together so that you are always ready for anything the teacher might want to work on during any class you attend or any workshop you go to: Notebook and a few pens/pencils, zills, veil(s), dance shoes or slippers of some kind since you never know what the floor will be like when dancing in places other than the Oasis, padded socks, dress in layers or keep a tee or sweat shirt in your bag so you can take off when you get warm or put on when you cool down, water, a few snack bars, a first aid kit including Advil & visine, feminine products, etc., a sewing kit w/Safety Pins – if you don’t need all of these things – some one else will, your business cards to give to people you meet.
When coming to the Belly Dance classes at the Oasis you will complete this form – Bellydance Class sheet
.
You can either download it, print it, complete it and bring it with you or fill one out for us when you arrive.
You will also need to fill out the Oasis Membership form if you are NEW to the studio. You can print it out ahead of time as well
